I had always wanted to find a vehicle by which I could communicate what I wanted to paint about. Matchsticks did that for me.

They come to me completely manufactured. I have always been drawn to the Arts and Crafts movement, to Ruskin and Morris and the people who rebelled against the Industrial Revolution. Putting each matchstick down turns it back into something organic and completely unique. Together they tell the story. That is the reason I keep returning to them.

I take the control off the panels and let the matchsticks find their own path on the canvas. This isn't me doing it. It's coming from somewhere else.

The work is about the human collective. Each of us is an individual, and each of us is needed to tell the overall story. The power within each of us goes towards the collective, and the same is true of the matchsticks.

I am just a matchstick on the canvas. And there's nothing wrong with that.
